Domain Name Registration Cons

In the past I have received several unsolicited e-mails and faxes from companies offering to sell or pre-register domain names. These offers were doubtful to say the least.

The most common cons are:-

THE FINAL RENEWAL INVOICE

Renewal notices and invoices are sent out, apparently from your existing domain name registrar. They are actually sent by a totally different company. The small print reveals that users who sign-up are actually authorising the new company to transfer their domain name to the company.

DOMAIN NAME PRE-REGISTRATION

This con offers you the opportunity to reserve or pre-register the new top level domain names such as .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, .golf, etc. Customers are asked for up-front fees in exchange for these names or extensions.

As an aside many Web browsers cannot display these extensions yet - other browsers need a special plug-in.

THE RENEWAL / MULTIPLE DOMAIN NAME OFFER

Potential customers are sent fax and / or e-mails giving them the chance to pre-register or purchase new top-level domain names when they are released. Some offer guarantees and preferential treatment, especially if you pre-register multiple domain names.

THESE GUARANTEES ARE WORTHLESS. When it comes to domain name registration it is strictly first-come first-served.

You have been warned - let the buyer beware!
